"You're more likely to unlock a big leap in performance by trying differently than by trying harder. You might be able to work 10% harder, but a different approach might work 10x better." Quote from James Clear
This is a powerful observation for tackling problems at work & in our personal lives. It's easy to just keep doing the same thing & hope for different results. Sometimes we need to try something different to make a breakthrough.
For example, when it comes to Risk Management, we have well developed corporate rules to mitigate risk. But sometimes these rules inhibit business growth. The world is changing rapidly, the risks businesses face are more complex. Just trying harder to follow the same path we have previously done is not going to help us win profitable work. Can we get to the same destination via a different route? It is therefore key to understand the risks we are trying to avoid & then be creative, agile & nimble in our approach to problem solving.
I experienced a similar personal challenge last week. My training programme said “6 hour hilly run”. So off I went. But it was the warmest day of the year & the sun was intense. After 4 hours I felt I was suffering from heat exhaustion. I’m not a quitter, so my default position was to just keep going, keep trying harder & suffer the discomfort.
However, I decided to adopt a different approach. I got back to my car, had food & water. I even had a 20 minute nap. My core temperature dropped & I felt better. I then decided to run the flats & descents, and walk the hills as the sun was still intense. This change in strategy meant that I got to the end goal of being out for 6 hours but rather than stick rigidly to the rule book (my training programme), I took a different approach to still get the training benefit.
What are you going to try differently today? Remember, it's not always about working harder. Sometimes it's about trying something different.
When managing the risks in our business, use Risk Management as a Business Enabler, focus on what you want to avoid happening & explore different ways to get the result you want.
